You will have a simple matching/identification quiz on these phrases tomorrow. After recess, students reviewed multiplying decimals under 1.0 with grids. The video posted is also a review of this. Your PAR will require you to watch this video and explain how to do it. Be sure to use transition words when you write the steps out. In the afternoon, we did some FreshGrade updates and ended the day with inquiry and some time outside.

I’m going to explain how to multiply decimals using a 10x10 graph. First each row in the graph represents 1 tenth. So, if we had 0.5x0.6, we would have to colour 0.5 in the graph. 0.5 is 5 tenths. So, if each row or column is 1 tenth then we colour in 5 rows. Next, we colour in 6 columns. Now the overlapping colours have our answer. 0.5x0.6=? there is one more step. Because we have 30, we need to place the decimal point. So, if 0.5 has one decimal, it will take 1 jump to place it. But because we have 0.6, we add that jump as well. So, the decimal point will go in the front. So, 0.5x0.6=0.30.

FEEDBACK: Change the punctuation of the "overlapping colours" sentence because it doesn't really make sense. Maybe change it to "Now the overlapping colours have our answer, which is 30. After that, there is just one more step.You could also explain briefly why you colour in 6 columns because the sentence seems bit too short to me.

Model multiplying with decimals less than 1 with a 10 by 10 grids

1st you get your equation. Let’s say your Equation is 0.5 x 0.8.
2nd you need a 10x10 grid and then you need to colour 0.5 in the Grid.
Every square is 0.01 so you need to colour in 30 squares going (width).
3rd you need to show 0.8 so colour in 80 squares going( length).
4th you look at the grid and the overlapping squares are the answer. So the overlapping squares are 40. That is how you do it.

in the rare scenario that you would like to know about multiply decimals with 10 x 10 grids if so your in luck because i will be teaching you just that. So when you multiply with 10 x 10 grids there are things you need to know on spot on a 10 x 10 grid 1 slot is 0.01 you need 100 of thos to make a whole which would be 1.0. Now that you know the basics i can show you how to do the actual multiplecation first lets get an equation lets say 0.2 x 0.6 first you would have 2 shade in 2 rows of the 10 x 10 block an then shade 6 rows going the oposite way then you count the blocks that were shaded twice the ones that over lap then youve got your answer. now you know how to multiply on a 10 x 10 grid.

How do you multiply using a grid using numbers less than 1?
For example if you want to multiply 0.2 by 0.3 you would shade in 0.2 of 1 vertically and shade in 0.3 horizontally with a different color. The amount that is shaded in twice is the answer. So the answer is 0.06. That's how you multiply with 10x10 grids.

Some people don’t know how to multiply with a 10x10 grid so I will show you how to multiple with the 10x10 grid. If you get this question: 0.9 x 0.7, you will have to color 9 tens down (note: each 10 blocks equal 0.1). and after drawing 9 tens down you have to color 7 tens sideways with a different color, so you don’t get confused. Thirdly Count all the squares that have been colored together with both of these different colors touched together but do not count the colors that did not touch together. Finally your answer would be 0.63 and it is ez as that.

How do you multiply decimals under one with visual grids? Multiplying decimals using calculations may be effective, but it does not show the reason behind doing that. However, using hundreds grids is an efficient and accurate way to get the answer. Firstly, shade the number of ones in your first factor in the hundreds grid vertically. For example, when calculating 0.3*0.7, you would shade three columns because each column has ten ones, so three tens (otherwise known as "rod" when dealed with visually) will be three tenths of a hundred. For example, when calculating 0.5*0.5, you would shade five columns because each column represents one tenth, so five tens (otherwise known as "rod" when dealing it visually) will be five tenths of a hundred. This is exactly how you represent 0.5 on a grid since this decimal can be easily converted to 5/10. Next, shade in your second factor of the product horizontally. In this case of 0.5*0.5, shade in another five rows in the same grid. One important note is to shade the whole row instead of where the columns and the rows meet. Having trouble multiplying decimals on a 10x10 grid? I'll help you out! 10x10 grid would have 100 squares and each square is 0.1. Let's use 0.2 x 0.4 as an example. You have your 100 square grid, you're gonna color in 2 squares, then 4 squares then you overlap the colours again on the squares beside them. There should be 8 squares that are darker then the others and that should be your answer which would be 0.8.

2) I'm pretty sure every separate square is 0.01 since it's out of 100

I'm guessing that most people already know how to multiply decimals under 1, but do you know how to use a 10 by 10 grid to solve a question? Although not many people use this strategy in their every day lives when trying to solve a question fast, it is still a great way to show your thinking and make sure your answer is most definitely correct. If you don't already know how to use a 10 by 10 grid to solve questions like these, I will explain it to you. To start off, you'll have to know that every square is one out of a hundred, which is equivalent to 0.01. How to multiply decimals on a 10x10 grid? We would be calculating 0.2x0.7. Each square on the grid equals to 0.01 and each row equals to 0.1. First, we shade out 0.2, which is 2 rows horizontally. Then, colour in 0.7 vertically, which is 7 rows. Lastly, you would get a fully shaded grid with some overlapping squares, and that would be your answer. In Conclusion, I think multiplying decimals by 10x10 grid would be a lot easier when you fully understand it.

In total, the grid would have 100 squares, so before doing anything else, think of 0.2 as a fraction out of 100. In that case, 0.2 would equal to 20, since I know 0.02 is equivalent to 2. Now that you have the number 20, you would want to shade in 20 out of the hundred squares, whether its in rows, or columns, it doesn't really matter. After doing this, the next decimal number should be pretty easy to figure out. 0.5 is equal to 50, so shade in 50 of the squares. Remember, the route you did before with your previous decimal number should be the opposite of what you did with the present. To go along with that, make sure the shaded squares for the equations are in different colours. Finally, you're done shading in the squares, and this part is also really simple. How do you multiply decimal using a ten by ten grid? Most people would choose to calculate the answer using numbers because it is the faster way. But to help understand the problem, learning using a grid can be way easier to understand. I will demonstrate how to use this strategy using 0.8x 0.5. First, you will have to convert the decimals into fractions, you can turn the denominators into 100 to better understand more. Since 0.8 is 80/100, you will have to fill in 80 sections on the grid or 8 columns, you should fill it in from the left side. One 10x10 grid or a whole has 100 sections, which means every section is 0.01 of the whole. Now, using a different coloured pen, fill in 30 sections from the bottom of the grid. You don't have to fill in the grid left then bottom, as long as the section you filled in are perpendicular to each other you're doing it correctly. As you can see on your grid, some parts you coloured are overlapped, count how many sections overlapped and convert that number into decimals and you'll have your answer. In this case, my answer to the example question is 0.4. To summarize, covert the decimals into fractions, colour the grid from different sides, count the overlapped sections, and covert that into a decimal.
