Tuesday: Learning How to Classify Living Organisms

Learning how to organize information is a very important skill to have. You have already learned how to structure and organize your e-folios and your Google Drives in a systematic and logical manner. This allows for quick and easy access to information. Today, we learned that almost anything can be classified into different groups. This helps identify things and allows us to classify them into different categories.

1.) Math 6 - Questions #2 and 3 from the board (Workbook Ch.3 Lesson 6). And # 1 and 4 from the textbook.
Math 7 - Practice Pg. 21 #1-10 and worksheet

2.) LA: Hand in your 'PASSION TRAILERS' to Mr. Hong's Inbox once you have published it.

3.) SCIENCE - Complete both sides of the 'CLASSIFYING COMMON ITEMS' worksheet.

4.) POST A REPONSE: Today we reviewed learned more about different types of reading strategies. We reviewed the different types of connections. (Text to text, text to self, text to world, and text to media). Write about 2 different connections you had to today's reading of 'The One and Only Ivan'. Be sure to explain in detail. Also, feel free to comment on what you learned about the behaviour of gorillas and how similar they are too humans (Video Clip).

Friday: Set Your Goals as High as You Fly Your Kites

We had a great time making and flying our kites on Friday. Using different mediums for art is always an exciting thing! Art is a very important part of your education. We also learned how kites connect people around the world! There is much culture behind these flying objects.

In addition to this, we learned more about gorillas and how they behave in the wild. It was interesting watching the National Geographic documentary. I'm sure all of you were you thinking about Ivan and made a connection with the silverback you saw. Gorillas are clearly very intelligent and emotional animals. We will look deeper into this next week when we start Science!

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE (3 parts): Based on what you have learned about character development. What can you tell us about....
A.) Ivan's character
B.) Mack's character.
Explain using examples from the beginning of the story up to where we finished on Friday. I e-mailed the audio file of the read aloud to all students who were not present today. If you did not receive it, let me know and I will share it with you on Google Drive or by email.
C.) Write down 2 deep questions and answers based on the criteria you have learned for creating deep questions.

2.) Math 6 - Board work will be collected on Tuesday.
Math 7 - Any unfinished work.

3.) FUN MATH 6/7 HOMEWORK - Mrs. Van gave me a great website for you all to try out. It has been baffling me because I can't seem to figure out how it works! Visit this website and see if you can figure out how the 'FLASH MIND READER' works. The crystal ball can read your mind! There will be a prize for students who are able to figure out how it works. Post any questions/comments here.

4.) Language Arts / E-Folio - Do your best to complete as much of your 'PASSION TRAILERS' as possible. Use the criteria points we came up with together in class, as well you can refer to the Guideline/Criteria sheet that I shared with all of you on your Google Drive. You should have all received an email from me with the shared document. If you didn't, be sure to email me RIGHT AWAY so that I can send it to you. Also, if you're having trouble logging into your accounts, refer to the end of the shared document as I have included detailed information.

Thursday: What Can We Learn from Animals?

We continued reading from 'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN' today and saw that we can learn a lot from animals. In addition to this, we watched a YouTube video about a relationship between an elephant and a dog. It was heart warming to see such a strong bond of friendship form between two different animals.

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE - What can humans learn from the relationship between the elephant and the dog? Watch the video clip again and pay attention to near the end of the clip. (VIDEO CLIP)

2.) MATH 6 - Complete board work on prime factorization trees.
MATH 7 - Any assigned work.

3.) FUN ACTIVITY - Continue working on your passion trailers. Here is a link to Miss Fei's Passion trailer. Use it as a general guideline of how you may want to set your trailer up. Do you notice any similarities between the one Miss Fei showed you and Mr. Hong's Passion trailer from the first week of school? Any differences?

Wednesday: Honesty Shouldn't Go Unrewarded

We have been learning about social responsibility and citizenship since the beginning of September. I have included a link below to a video that I thought you would all really enjoy. It goes to show you that honesty truly is the best policy and you never know when you will be rewarded for it!

1.) GLOBAL READ ALOUD: Visit http://onlyivan.weebly.com and post in your 'GROUP INTRODUCTIONS' and 'PREDICTIONS' sections. You should ask some of the other students questions about them and also give them feedback on their predictions taking into consideration the criteria for good feedback that we have learned. Remember, don't forget about 'THE POWER OF WORDS'! Random and bizarre questions are not ones that you should be asking. Stay focused.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE: View the video link below and explain why it is important to be honest? Give one example and provide some support to back up your opinion.

3.) FUN ACTIVITY - GENERATE YOUR OWN QR CODE: Click here and create your own QR code for your E-Folio. Save it to your desktop and store the image in your Google Drive. We will make your 'E-FOLIO QR CODE PLATES' for your desks tomorrow. If you like, you can hand it in via our digital 'HAND-IN' box for me to take a look at. Test your code out with your mobile device to see if it works! QR CODES allow for quick and easy access to information on the go. This will become your 'FOLIO BUSINESS CARD'!

4.) FUN ACTIVITY #2 - Play around with your 'PASSION TRAILERS'. You will share this with your Global Read Aloud groups. In addition to this, you will share them with your digital buddies that you will be linking up with over the next few weeks. So far, I have organized for you to have buddies in 4 different continents.

Tuesday: The Power of Words

Today we learned about the importance of the words we choose to use. We discussed the 'POWER OF WORDS' and saw a great video clip that displayed this. We also discussed the criteria for a good blog response that was in lines with our 'BLOGGING B.R.G.R.R.R.' criteria. Also, we played 8 corner soccer with Ms. Wilson's class and had fun doing this with prime numbers, factors, and multiples. We learned the importance of ball control.

1.) Math 6: Quiz tomorrow - Factors, Multiples, Prime Numbers, Composite numbers, arrays, factor rainbows, prime factorization trees. Know your definitions and how to find factors/multiples,
Math 7: Page 18 #2-5

2.) LA: Today, we continued with our 'QUESTIONING' skills and our ability to recognize and interpret 'EXQUISITE LANGUAGE'. We learned about the 'POWER OF WORDS' and that using certain words can have a profound effect on how someone interprets a sentence. Show your parents the video we saw in class today.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Post 1 deep question and answer it with details and your honest opinion. In addition to this, post one phrase/word that you found to be 'EXQUISITE' from today's reading of 'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN'. Explain why the word/phrase was powerful to you.

Monday: Q.W.I.L. Reading Strategies

We learned about several different reading strategies in class today. We focused on 'QUESTIONING' (simple vs deep) and identifying 'EXQUISITE LANGUAGE' in our readings. The posters are above the whiteboard

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE ON OUR CLASS SITE: We started the Global Read Aloud with our partner classes in Surrey, Ottawa, and Illinois today. We completed 'QWILS' for the first read today with an emphasis on the 'Q - QUESTIONING' and the 'L - Exquisite Language'. Post 2-3 of your deep Q's and 1 of your L's. Once you see that one of your classmates has responded, please do your best to reply to some of their questions.

2.) Global Read Aloud Blogging Site - http://onlyivan.weebly.com Be sure to complete your 'PREDICTIONS' and 'SELF INTRODUCTIONS' if you haven't done so yet. Make sure you are posting in the proper sections.
