Tuesday: The Volleyball Dance

Today, we learned how to set a volleyball. We decided to call this technique the 'Volleyball Dance'! Watch this video to see the proper technique. Although you can't see the position of his legs, you can imagine that he is bending down and moving upward as he sets the ball. Remember, the power comes from your legs and your arms.

1.) MATH 6 - Any assigned work.
MATH 7 - Mid-chapter review worksheet, Pg. 69 Mid-
chapter review #1,2,3, 6, and 9.2 questions from
yesterday's worksheet.

2.) SCIENCE 6/7 - Using your bibliography handout that was handed out in class today (Also shared in your Google Drives), and complete your bibliography sources for the ones you have used so far. This includes any information, pictures, and videos that you have used. You must use the correct format. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail Mr. Hong and/or Ms. Fei.

3.) FIELD TRIP FORMS - Return your ice skating forms as soon as possible.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE - Post one of your reliable sources that you used for your Science Research (5 Kingdoms) using the bibliography format you learned in class. Feel free to refer to your handout and/or your Google Document. It can be for information, an image, or a video.

Monday: Critical Thinkers Who Integrate Knowledge

In science, we worked on transforming notes into paragraphs for the Five Kingdoms Project. Students integrated the use of transition words (from LA) into their science paragraphs. Additionally, students were encouraged to express their creativity and writing skills through their science projects.

In LA, we learned about the plot, and used a graph to depict the plot curve.

1.) POST A RESPONSE: We learned about the different parts of the plot curve today. The sections of the plot curve are: introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

For each section of the plot curve (except the resolution), write down the event(s) in "The One and Only Ivan" that belongs to that section of the plot curve.

For example, if you think that Stella's death is a part of the rising action, you would write "Rising Action: Stella's death". You may have more than one event in each section of the plot curve.

Use the format below in your response: (exclude the resolution section)
Introduction:
Rising action:
Climax:
Falling Action:

2.) LA: Finish your name card (should have an adjective that begins with the same letter as your name)
3.) SCIENCE: Finish writing at least 2 paragraphs for the 5 Kingdoms of Living Things Project.

Make sure to add transition words to your paragraphs.

4.) MATH 7: 5.6 Worksheet #1a-f (use grids for 3 of the questions)
MATH 6: Any homework assigned by your teacher (feel free to post it in the comments below)

Friday: Building Bridges with Transition Words

We focused on making inferences during the read-aloud today, and students were able to share their ideas via http://todaysmeet.com/1ivan2.
To hone our writing skills, we practiced identifying and using transition words. Students also enthusiastically brainstormed adjectives to describe their names.
Continuing with the Five Kingdoms Science Project, we discussed key elements of visual design for posters, and used the C.R.A.A.P. reliability test to evaluate websites.

During clean up time, it was fantastic to see certain students taking extra responsibility for the condition of the classroom without being asked. Props to SpongeBob (sweeping), the Overseeker (fixing improperly stacked chairs), and others who helped! It would be great to see everyone taking ownership of our classroom environment!

1.) POST A RESPONSE: Using what we learned in-class today about transition words, revise your posts about your outdoor adventures:

Take into account any peer feedback that was given
Add or change transition words to make your paragraph more fluent
Post BOTH your original paragraph AND revised paragraph in your response.

2.) SCIENCE 6/7:

For homework, finish the 2 C.R.A.A.P. tests given in class. Feel free to evaluate a video, book, or other source for one of your C.R.A.A.P tests!

Brainstorm CREATIVE ways to present your project! But do not print anything yet (for your poster), as you will be receiving peer feedback, and we still need to discuss about the bibliography. You are not expected to finish your project this weekend, but you can make some good progress by:

Finding more RELIABLE websites for information and images
Keeping track of the website URL for ALL information and images that you use
Drawing/creating your own images for each of the 5 kingdoms

Thursday: Giving Students a Voice

Today, Ms. Fei and I decided to have the students reinforce their reading skills via Todaysmeet.com/1ivan. The students focused on writing connections, but were also told to ask questions and respond to any comments that were made in our conversation stream. This allowed for some students who don't normally participate openly during class to contribute to the discussion and participate without feeling any anxiety about having to speak out in front of the entire class. Over the past year and a bit, we have learned that giving students a choice of how to express their opinions is a very important factor in student motivation, learning, participation, expression, and self-esteem.

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Decide on what format you are thinking about using for your Science project and post a link to an example here so your classmates can see what it's like. The example does not have to be on 'THE 5 KINGDOMS'. For example, if you choose to create a 'PREZI', feel free to post the link to an example of one here and attach a brief note explaining why you chose this style of presentation. We have examples in our learning gallery from last year that you could link to as well. You will start 'CREATING' tomorrow! If you decide to start tonight, go right ahead! :) If somebody posts one type of presentation, please post a different type. We want as many different examples as possible so you can get an idea of what they are like. I will post a link to the website I was referring to later this evening.
