MONDAY: WRITTEN RESPONSES

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Complete worksheet 3.9. Watch the 2 videos listed in then video links section. These will help you do really well on the unit test (Thursday)

2.) LA/Novel Approach:

Complete first draft of your written response according to the criteria handout you received today.
Use the graphic organizer on the backside of your criteria/handout if you think it will help you get your ideas down on paper.
If you are bored tonight and looking for some additional work, feel free to continue the conversation on the Novel Approach blog site.

THURSDAY: PREDICTIONS

Today, students reviewed and learned more about pre-reading strategies and comprehension strategies. They looked at text features to help them predict what a chapter, unit, etc would be about. For example: The table of contents, unit title, chapter title, sub-titles, summaries, captions on photos, photos/pictures/images, etc.

In addition to this, in Physical Education, students learned how to measure their resting heart rates and recorded these numbers as their initial measurements for the year. They also recorded the number of push-ups, sit-ups, and 2-lap run times. The students will track their progress by using a variety of record keeping methods from using their Google Drives, E-folios, and various exercise apps on their mobile devices. IE Nike+, Strava, etc. Click here to see a heart rate zone chart for children!

LEARNING INTENTIONS:
1.) To learn pre-reading strategies and to use them to make accurate predictions.
2.) To learn how to accurately measure one's own resting heart rate and to understand the benefits of doing so.

Keep in mind there are some modern text features (IE Hashtags, geolocations, etc) that are present that were not discussed in class.

Friday: Building Bridges with Transition Words

We focused on making inferences during the read-aloud today, and students were able to share their ideas via http://todaysmeet.com/1ivan2.
To hone our writing skills, we practiced identifying and using transition words. Students also enthusiastically brainstormed adjectives to describe their names.
Continuing with the Five Kingdoms Science Project, we discussed key elements of visual design for posters, and used the C.R.A.A.P. reliability test to evaluate websites.

During clean up time, it was fantastic to see certain students taking extra responsibility for the condition of the classroom without being asked. Props to SpongeBob (sweeping), the Overseeker (fixing improperly stacked chairs), and others who helped! It would be great to see everyone taking ownership of our classroom environment!

1.) POST A RESPONSE: Using what we learned in-class today about transition words, revise your posts about your outdoor adventures:

Take into account any peer feedback that was given
Add or change transition words to make your paragraph more fluent
Post BOTH your original paragraph AND revised paragraph in your response.

2.) SCIENCE 6/7:

For homework, finish the 2 C.R.A.A.P. tests given in class. Feel free to evaluate a video, book, or other source for one of your C.R.A.A.P tests!

Brainstorm CREATIVE ways to present your project! But do not print anything yet (for your poster), as you will be receiving peer feedback, and we still need to discuss about the bibliography. You are not expected to finish your project this weekend, but you can make some good progress by:

Finding more RELIABLE websites for information and images
Keeping track of the website URL for ALL information and images that you use
Drawing/creating your own images for each of the 5 kingdoms

Tuesday: The Power of Words

Today we learned about the importance of the words we choose to use. We discussed the 'POWER OF WORDS' and saw a great video clip that displayed this. We also discussed the criteria for a good blog response that was in lines with our 'BLOGGING B.R.G.R.R.R.' criteria. Also, we played 8 corner soccer with Ms. Wilson's class and had fun doing this with prime numbers, factors, and multiples. We learned the importance of ball control.

1.) Math 6: Quiz tomorrow - Factors, Multiples, Prime Numbers, Composite numbers, arrays, factor rainbows, prime factorization trees. Know your definitions and how to find factors/multiples,
Math 7: Page 18 #2-5

2.) LA: Today, we continued with our 'QUESTIONING' skills and our ability to recognize and interpret 'EXQUISITE LANGUAGE'. We learned about the 'POWER OF WORDS' and that using certain words can have a profound effect on how someone interprets a sentence. Show your parents the video we saw in class today.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE: Post 1 deep question and answer it with details and your honest opinion. In addition to this, post one phrase/word that you found to be 'EXQUISITE' from today's reading of 'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN'. Explain why the word/phrase was powerful to you.

Monday: Q.W.I.L. Reading Strategies

We learned about several different reading strategies in class today. We focused on 'QUESTIONING' (simple vs deep) and identifying 'EXQUISITE LANGUAGE' in our readings. The posters are above the whiteboard

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE ON OUR CLASS SITE: We started the Global Read Aloud with our partner classes in Surrey, Ottawa, and Illinois today. We completed 'QWILS' for the first read today with an emphasis on the 'Q - QUESTIONING' and the 'L - Exquisite Language'. Post 2-3 of your deep Q's and 1 of your L's. Once you see that one of your classmates has responded, please do your best to reply to some of their questions.

2.) Global Read Aloud Blogging Site - http://onlyivan.weebly.com Be sure to complete your 'PREDICTIONS' and 'SELF INTRODUCTIONS' if you haven't done so yet. Make sure you are posting in the proper sections.

THE GLOBAL READ ALOUD
We came up with a class generated criteria of what makes a good prediction. A good prediction is logical and takes into account what you already know about the story. It also 'PREDICTS' the following parts of a story.
- Who
- What
- Where
- When
- Why
- How

1.) POST A RESPONSE: We did a lot of work on reading predictions. We brainstormed with sticky notes, discussed, and created a K-W-L. chart. Post your revised prediction only after going through the 'BLOGGING B.R.G.R.R.R.'. Remember, your revised prediction is based on what you learned from watching the 'BOOK TRAILER'. It must also take into consideration the 2-3 suggestions for improvement your classmates gave you.

2.) POST A RESPONSE #2: Reflect on what you learned about predictions today. Did your revised prediction differ from the predictions you made on your stickies? Explain.
