Freedom Train!

Today, students made some progress on their persuasive essay/speeches. They locked down their topics in their 1 on 1 conferences with Mr. Hong and started researching some points to support their opinions. They know that a persuasive essay requires reliable evidence to persuade the reader. This will come in the form of quotes from authority figures, statistics from reliable research, and examples from good sources. In the afternoon, we finished reading 'The Freedom Train'. Students will work on a powerful written response on tomorrow's post a response assignment.

Harriet Tubman was (A-lot of other people might be more beneficial to human rights or big steps in human history) probably one of the most remembered woman seeing as she saved dozens of black men/woman from slavery, they were treated as human livestock (livestock is what we describe animals as). In the video we learned that Harriet Tubman risked everything in order to save her family from slavery, led a military raid, and was a important part of the woman rights move. But that was just a few of the greatest accomplishment by Harriet Tubman. Harriet's mum was born a slave, she was the fifth children out of 9, her two older sisters were sold to a chain gang. Even as a small kid, Minty was hired by several owners doing all kinds of odd jobs, who all gave her whippings and punishments. (Child Abuse) When Minty went to a neighborhood store, her life changed forever when the store owner threw a 2 pound weight at a fugitive slave but since he had a lousy hit Minty instead giving her "sleeping spells" she then was useless to her owner and worked with her father Ben Ross who taught her how to lumber giving her more strength. Minty then met a free black man and married him, John Tubman. Harriet Tubman then changed her name to Harriet (her mothers name) and since she was married to John Tubman her last name would change to Tubman. Then tradegy struck, Harriet Tubman's owner had died, the widow planned to sell Harriet Tubman, but Harriet Tubman did not want to be away from family. But she remembered the "underground railroad" a secret network of houses/shelters from white men that will be happy to help black people to somewhere they can be free, Harriet Tubman dreamed that she was a bird and she saw the path to liberation and freedom. She then after made her way to Pennsylvania where racism is not as bad as it is in the north. And went back and forth 13 times saving her family from slavery. AFter that she was called Moses since he freed the Isralites from slavery (Egypt). She also led a military raid that saved 700 people from slavery! But life was still not fair and she objected and after months she finally got 20 dolars a month.

This was when I was in Kindergaryen, when I was playing a game of tag with my dad's friend's daughter, she purposefully tripped me over and I lost my balance, causing me to fall, additionally bumping my head into the pillar. There she began to laugh and she tagged me and just ran away, only until I told my dad dis anywone notice. After, I was rushed to the hospital and luckily, my injury did not cause much damage. Though, I don't remember the details clearly anymore and Harriet's injury was an accident, a lot to say must be included. After all, the object which weighed 2 pounds was still being thrown at a fugitive slave which is unacceptable; this action showed the hurtful actions that were being performed towards our people. My mom said that Harriet Tubman must have been very brave and smart because she was able to create such an intuitive plan and she must’ve also been very caring as she could have escaped on her own, though she returned multiple times to save her family and friends.

The life of Harriet Tubman is full of achievements. For a summary for that, there is a book called the "Freedom Train." This book is based on Harriet Tubman's life experience and I think the big idea is to never give up. I felt this was the big idea because she rescued all of her family by going back and forth 13 times to get her family to Canada. Even after that, she leaded a military raid and fought for rights of women. She also served as a "conductor" at the underground railroad, which was the network used by enslaved black Americans to obtain their freedom in the 30 years before the Civil War (1860-1865) according to national geographic. In conclusion, if you are interested in this book, you should read it!

In 1898, Tubman's life had changed, when an overseer, threw a 2-pound weight, missed, and hit Harriet in the head. She was then caused to have random sleeping spells, and as an unfit slave, her owner attempted to sell her. Instead, she taught to lumber, with her father. This body strength, and put her in touch with freed, black sailors. Afterwards, she learned about the secret communications that occurred along trade routes, which would be very valuable in her later life. Her owner died in 1849, and was in threat of being sold from everyone she loved. Fortunately, she'd heard of an underground railroad, a secret network of safe-houses, boat captains, and wagon drivers, who were willing to harbour fugitive enslaved people on their way north. Tubman fled with 2 of her brothers, but eventually turned back, for the fear of being lost. In 1849, she set out on her own, following the North Star to freedom. Harriet returned back to help free family members, and earned the nickname black Moses. Later, the US Treasury announced that there would be a ten dollar bill, with Harriet on it. The story of Harriet's life was listed in the book "Freedom Train". I think that the book is about how you should always try to accomplish your goals, and never give up. To illustrate, throughout the entire book, Harriet had to work towards her goal, of abolishing slavery, and in the end, she was finally able to do it! I think that this idea is very important and you should use it in all aspects of life. For example, a connection I made was, when I first joined the swim club I was in, I was very slow compared to everyone else, but eventually I kept working at it, and I eventually caught up, and even passed some people! An example of an inference I made was, during the book, when it said that Harriet heard about an underground railway, since I knew that Harriet freed lots of slaves, I thought that maybe she used the railway to do so. I think that throughout the book, I learned that you should not give up on your hopes, just like what I think Harriet learned. Thanks for reading!

Although slavery had been abolished, there was still discrimination, and women did not have the privilege to vote. In 1888, Harriet tried fighting for gender equality, to allow women to vote. As she became more renowned, friends, and allies helped her collect a veteran's pension, for being in the Union Army. In 1899, she was allowed to get a $20, per month. Later, the US Treasury announced that there would be a ten dollar bill, with Harriet on it. The story of Harriet's life was listed in the book "Freedom Train". I think that the book is about how you should always try to accomplish your goals, and never give up. To illustrate, throughout the entire book, Harriet had to work towards her goal, of abolishing slavery, and in the end, she was finally able to do it! I think that this idea is very important and you should use it in all aspects of life. For example, a connection I made was, when I first joined the swim club I was in, I was very slow compared to everyone else, but eventually I kept working at it, and I eventually caught up, and even passed some people! An example of an inference I made was, during the book, when it said that Harriet heard about an underground railway, since I knew that Harriet freed lots of slaves, I thought that maybe she used the railway to do so. I think that throughout the book, I learned that you should not give up on your hopes, just like what I think Harriet learned. Harriet Tubman has completed hard tasks that helped her free slaves and become an important part of American history. Harriet was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in the early 1820's. Her life changed when and overseer tried to throw a 2-pound weight at a fugitive slave but it hit Harriet instead. After that, Harriet started to get sleeping spells which made her useless to buyers. Her father taught her how to lumber which increased her strength. She later learned the secret communication that was spoken in trade routes. Harriet married John Tubman in 1844 and changed her name to Harriet Tubman. When she heard of the underground railroad, she followed the north star and went to Pennsylvania. She returned to the south and back up north to help free her family from slavery. Her life changed forever when she suffers a major injury from a weight thrown at her head, for it caused her to often randomly fall asleep from brain damage. Harriet’s owner tried to sell her off, but nobody wanted a slave with “sleeping spells”. She ended up working with her father and this experience made her physically stronger and allowed her to communicate with free black men. She learned the secret way black people transmitted information which proved to be invaluable later in her life. In 1844, she married a free black man named John Tubman and renamed herself Harriet. 5 years later, her owner died with his widow threatening to sell her off and separating her from everyone she knows and loves. She had heard of a series of safehouses, boat captains, and wagon drivers called the underground railroad. The purpose of this network is to allow enslaved black people to escape to the north and later to Canada. Harriet runs away using this network to Canada and later revisits the US 13 times to save many black people from the terrible thing that is slavery. She later becomes a legendary figure in history known as the “Black Moses” and made friends with many powerful people across the world. I believe that the big idea of the video is that we need courage and determination in order to be successful and contribute to society. The American civil war was the war that determine slavery abolished. The fight between the south and the north. However although we have heard of the Women called Harriet Tubman we never knew much about her. Harriet Tubman (birth name Araminta Ross) was born in the early 1820s. At a young age she was sold to multiple owners and received horrible punishments. Her life will never be the same again when she was struck by a 2 pound weight that caused her to have sleeping spells, also known as Narcolepsy. There her current owner tried to sell her but was turned down by other buyers. She then was sent off to work with her father. Overtime her lumbering skills made her physical health extremely strong. While lumbering she would learn information that will make her life as different as the injury when she was younger. Later on in life she would meet John Tubman. Marry him and change her name to the name we know of her today, Harriet Tubman. After she tried her first attempt of the journey in the underground railroad. She eventually turned back but the underground railroad will be extremely important in the future. Again she tried and overtime went back and forth 13 times to rescue more people. This incredibly powerful and brave women was an American abolitionist and political activist who was born into slavery. Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross, in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States in the 18th centuries and died on March 10, 1913. When Tubman was still quite young, she took a blow to her head and was severely injured when an overseer threw a 2-pound weight at a fugitive enslaved person, who missed and knocked her out instead. This caused Harriet to have seizures and headaches for the rest of her life, which is also known today as narcolepsy. I have a connection with this because when I was around 5 years old, I was hit with a swing that was going incredibly fast towards my head and immediately knocked me out. I lost a lot of blood and my family rushed me to the hospital, where I then got stitches on my forehead and this incident unfortunately left a scar on my forehead. Everyone saved was finally safe and her family and friends settled with Harriet during this time. Harriet Tubman worked as a scout, spy, nurse and cook in the US Army during The Civil War, and helped the army rescue up to 700 enslaved people. She soon married Nelson Davis in 1869 and they adopted a baby girl named Gertie. I think that Harriet Tubman is a very strong, daring, brave, and an independent women who has changed today’s society and freedom for the better. “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” - Harriet Tubman. Who is Harriet Tubman? This incredibly powerful and brave women was an American abolitionist and political activist who was born into slavery. Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross, in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States in the 18th centuries and died on March 10, 1913. When Tubman was still quite young, she took a blow to her head and was severely injured when an overseer threw a 2-pound weight at a fugitive enslaved person, who missed and knocked her out instead. This caused Harriet to have seizures and headaches for the rest of her life, which is also known today as narcolepsy. Similarly, I have a connection with this because when I was around 5 years old, I was hit with a swing that was going incredibly fast towards my head and immediately knocked me out. Nonetheless, I lost a lot of blood and my family rushed me to the hospital, where I then got stitches on my forehead and this incident unfortunately left a scar on my forehead. Harriet Tubman was a powerful women in history she was the women who saved the most slaves back then with the underground railway or the Freedom Train. She was incredibly strong. I think she would always push through for what she believed in. After gaining a serious head injury she was cursed with sleeping spells she was let go a few months latter to work. Once she was freed from her master she was doing well but than she started saving slaves left and right with he underground railway. Harriet Tubman is a legend that will be remembered.

I am sure you have heard about the phrase "Don't judge a book by it's cover" right? A brave woman who inspired and brought hope to many people. Who saved many lives, and has been recognized, goes by the name Harriet Tubman. As a child, Harriet Tubman lived in a family where most of her family members were shipped away to owners to be slaves. The book Freedom Train, talks about Harriet Tubman and the life she went through. I think the big idea of the story is that All lives matter. Whether they are Asian, African, Canadian, etc. you mustn't discriminate or judge especially if it's because of their appearance, their culture, or anything else. For example, black people used to be treated like dogs. They had owners and it was horrible because humans should live their own lives. They shouldn't be getting dominated because of their appearance. However, how did Harriet Tubman gain so much recognition? Harriet developed a sleeping spell from getting hit on the head with something unbelievable hard. Despite Harriet's sleeping spells, she gained a lot of strength by lumberjacking and becoming more brave. From then on, she heard about an underground railroad for black people to escape on. So, she escaped and was even able to go in and out from the underground railroad 13 more times to save her friends and families. After that, they escaped to Canada and raised awareness to everyone about equality for females. Harriet Tubman was well respected by many people and even Queen Victoria herself. She was someone who was break through chains which inspired and gave hope to a lot of people young and old.

Harriet Tubman was an enormous figure in American history. She was born into slavery, and at one point, she was hit in the head with a five-pound weight thrown by a slave owner. After this event, she would have sleeping spells for a long, long time. Her owner tried to sell her off, but nobody would buy a slave who got sleeping spells. Harriet got married in 1844, and changed her name to Harriet, after her mother. When her owner died in 1849, her owner's wife was going to try to sell her off again. Harriet was afraid because she didn't want to be taken away from her friends and family, and so she began making a plan to escape. She had heard about an Underground Railroad where escaped slaves could be safe on their way north. Harriet eventually reached the North, but returned 3 times to get her family. She continued helping slaves escape, and during the Civil War she was a very important person. Many new laws were made against slave owners, and owning slaves was eventually banned outright. Overall, I think the Big Idea of this story is that even though Harriet was a black woman with sleeping spells, she still helped end racism which was a huge feat for anybody at that time.

Back in the 1800s, black people wasn't equal to white people. They were recognized as slaves and treated poorly, until Harriet Tubman changed that. For this video, the Big Idea is that "Even though you might think something is impossible, it becomes possible if you try". For example, Harriet escaped from slavery, and she also got her niece, brothers, parents, and many others. Even though she was rewarded when captured, she got lots of black people to escape slavery and have freedom. I think this takes a lot of courage to make this happen because her life was in danger because of freeing black slaves. Also, I think one of the things that helped Harriet free the slaves is her braveness. If she wasn't that brave, I think she wouldn't been able to free the slaves and have equal rights. I also think that being a scout and a spy in the Civil War helped Harriet free the slaves too. If she wasn't, she might have been captured before she could complete her goal. I also had a time when I thought something was impossible, but after hard work, it became possible. I think one more thing that helped Harriet achieve her goal was her friends and supporters. If she didn't have any supporters, she could've done nothing, but because of her friends and supporters, she was able to achieve her goal. Overall, Harriet Tubman was a hero to black people and what will you do to save the black?

Harriet Tubman was born in 1820, she had 9 siblings and she was born a slave, but she was tired of being treated differently. She got a head injury by getting hit by a 5 pound weight that caused her to sleep at random times but that didn’t stop her. She freed a lot of slaves and became known all over America. She freed slaves by using the underground railroad. When Abraham Lincoln became president, all the slaves were free. She later worked at a hospital when she became older. Overall, Harriet Tubman was very brave and never gave up.

Harriet Tubman, an important figure to black history, the person who saved black slaves, is onne of the most recognized people of today. If it wouldn't be for her, black slaves might still be around today. She was born in 1820 in Africa and was stolen at a young age. She was forced to take care of babies as a slave. But she then decided to be a farmer with her dad and that was when she heard about the underground railroad, she then went on the ride with Ben and Harry, but decided to go back. But the next time they went, they wen't all the way there and came back and forth 13 times. She was nickmnamed Black Moses for her insane trips to set slaves free. Then the civil war happened and she became a nurse. She then became a doctor at a hospital and on her death bed, she said "I go away to prepare a place for you" I think the big idea of her life and the book is unwavering determination. Evdn if she hits a concrete wall, she manages to crumple it in one way or another. She was a very strong and independant black woman who did nof fear anyone.

The Underground Railroad was how she got them to Canada. Harriet Tubman first heard of the Underground Railroad from a friend of hers that always escaped no matter what. It was a railroad that the people that supported slavery hadn’t known about as that railroad was exactly a black only train to Canada. Even after all, she held missions where she went to help enslaved people escape, causing her wanted price to reach over $40,000 from the South. "I go away to prepare a place for you" Where Harriet Tubman's last words. Even as she breathed her last breaths, Harriet was thinking of her people. Harriet, born in March 1822 as Araminta Ross, was a slave. She had nine siblings, two of which were sold away. Sometime in her childhood, she was on an errand, when an overseer threw a two pound weight at a fugitive slave and missed, hitting Araminta in the head instead. This injury gave her sleeping spells, or Narcolepsy. As she grew older, she met a man called John Tubman. After they married in 1844, Araminta changed her name to Harriet, after her mother. When her owner died, and his widow planned on selling the enslaved humans, Harriet and two of her brothers ran away. Later, she returned to the south many, many times to free her parents, siblings and other slaves. When the civil war started, Harriet served as a nurse, a scout and a spy. In 1863, she became the first woman to plan and lead a military raid. After the war, she became a suffragette, demanding for voting rights for women. Even on her deathbed was she thinking about her people. As her last words were "I go away to prepare a place for you"

Slavery. The possession of another human against their will. It’s an awful thing that has caused so much pain in the world, and still dose today. Harriet Tubman was a woman who helped immensely in the abolishment of slavery and played a big part in the civil war. During her slavery, she would talk with free black sailers who spoke of an “underground railroad” that was helping to free escaped slaves. Another important moment in Harriet’s life was when she finally escaped from slavery and helped nearly seven hundred others others to freedom as well. She was also part of the Union Army and helped in many ways during the war. I think the big idea of the video we watched is that even though she has passed away, Harriet Tubman left a big impact on the world that has immensely helped abolish slavery. All in all, her actions helped make the world a better place.

Harriet Tubman had a spirit of fire to slivery because she had a grate record in the under ground rail rode. First she had more strength then the men from chopping wood. Second she had made every signal trip and with sleeping spiels. Finely she was the first woman to make an army and then free slaves. Thus all shows how she made the black free by the strength and smarts to do it.
