STUDENT ACTIVISM - PETITION!

Last night, students banded together to revolt against a presentation date they felt was too soon. They not only had an online discussion on our class website last night, but they also put together a petition on their own. They had many signatures on it, which also included two teachers from our school. We let the students present their petition to extend their presentation date until Monday. After hearing their argument, we decided to allow the students to present on Monday. When you become an adult and you want change in the world around you, a petition might be the first place you start! Good work class! Mr. Fisher and I were happy to see your political activism today!

3.) NOVEL APPROACH:

If you haven't already, make sure you have shared your document with Mr. Hong. I will give you feedback on how you can do better on your picture book next week!
When I was 8 is not being evaluated, simply assessed. The feedback you receive will help you next week!

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

On Friday, you banded together with your fellow classmates in division 1 and 2 to fight for what you believed in!
Your belief was that you required extra time to complete and prepare your black history projects/presentations.
You not only created a petition and had it signed by a large number of people and two teachers, but you did this in a very organized manner. You discussed it online, created a formal petition with signatures, and presented it to your teachers.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain how one person can make change.

1.) Paragraph format (intro, supporting sentences, and conclusion)
2.) Write about something you feel needs to be changed locally or globally and why you think this. (For example: It can be something at school, your community or something like Global warming - think about what Greta Thundberg. Watch this video for some inspiration.)

Did you ever ask yourself how one person make a difference? Well, I’m going to tell how one person can make a difference in our society. Sometimes it’s small things building up to really make a difference, so don’t just don’t do something good for this world just because you think that it’s so small. To illustrate, separating the wastes in the correct bins and picking up garbage on the streets might seem like really small things but they harm the environment greatly if you don’t do it. I think that we should just avoid using plastic at all because plastic is really causing a lot of problems for our environment in general. For instance, all the problems we are creating for our world are eventually going to come back to us like plastic polluting the ocean and we are eating the fish that ate plastic. We should love and take care of the environment because that world is our home and if we don’t take care of it, nobody else would. Be the change, don’t just follow what other people are doing. We can take small steps at a time like not using plastic straws, reuse things as often as you can, etc.

In conclusion, I think that anyone can make a change in this world if they wanted to so at least try before you give up.

Be the change, a inspirational video about how YOU can make a difference. You may be wondering, "How can I make a difference?" I'll explain. Imagine this: you see someone getting bullied at school, you can either walk away or find an adult who can help. You obviously choose the second option, that's making a change. Another way you can make a difference is by using less plastic materials, I've done a project on this before so I'll tell you some alternatives you can use instead of plastic. First of all, you can start by getting re-usable bags for shopping instead of plastic bags, it can carry more items and won't be thrown in areas that may harm nature. Secondly, you can recycle plastic bottles and cans (coke, sprite, Pepsi and other drinks) for example you can either go to your local grocery store and bring all your bottles that can be recycled and get 75 cents for each can/bottles. Another thing you can do with bottles is make crafts, you can use a glass jar to keep other food, like cookies or to hold you pencils in. Lastly, you can just simply recycle more and try not to waste any food, I did some research and it says 35.5 million tonnes of food were wasted in 2019. In conclusion we need to take more care of our planet, even if it's something simple like switching from plastic materials to re-usable items.

usually only a large group of people can change the world but that's wrong today I will talk about how 1 person can change the world. lets start with Greta Thumberg she helped change the world by fighting against the government and trying to stop climate change. She single handedly started protests to do more about climate change and she's like 16 or something and has aspergers so that means 1 person can make a lot of change. I think people of all age, gender, or ever culture can make a change by just them self.

Have you ever heard of the Great Pacific Garbage patch? This monstrosity exists in the Pacific Ocean hence the name "Great Pacific Garbage Patch". After 50 years of throwing garbage in to the ocean, the patch has grown to the size of more than double the size of Texas. Yet, the world isn't as concerned as we should be. People are trying to clean up the patch, but their efforts are miniscule compared to the amount of garbage that end up I the ocean.

I think we should be focusing our efforts on solving the great garbage patch in the middle of the pacific ocean instead of spending the money on social security. Our population is so big, it doesn't matter if one human dies or gets murdered. We could gather everyone in one space and drop a nuke and still we wouldn't even kill a quarter of the population. Instead we should focus our efforts in to saving mother nature. Mother nature provided u with all our basic needs, and how do we repay her? We pillage the world of its resources and bit by bit destroy everything.

Next, scientists say that it would take ninety years just to clean up the microplastics. If that's the case, what's stopping us for grabbing boats and nets to clean up the big pieces. We just say that its going to take a long time and its nearly impossible, so we give up. If you noticed some people don't people don't believe that. If a small group of humans can make a dent, imagine what the entire human race can do. We could pay the homeless to assist us in cleaning up the patch. That way the homeless can buy food and other needs and we can eat non-poisoned seafood. Win-Win. What is stopping us? Our own selfishness. We as humans tend to care about only the present not the future. We can just say the world isn't going to end while we live, but who knows? At this rate we could destroy Earth in 1 year or 1 billion year.

In summary, I feel like we should really be spending more effort in to saving the ocean and the ocean creatures. Although that is only a start. We have to do so much more to save humanity and other animals form extinction in the future. We only have two directions, two ways to follow. Preservation or Extinction.

“Everything you do makes a difference but it’s up to you what kind of difference you want to make”

Today, our world faces many challenges and problems some people ignore, or some people rise up to make a difference and it’s up to you whether you want to help or not. Something that I want to change globally is greener grass and clear blue skies. Basically I want us to recycle more and to use reusable things so that our waters won’t be polluted and so that many animal species won’t go extinct. I myself am trying to help this global issue by using reusable containers on the go, and I have a recycling, compost, and regular trash bag, and I try not to buy useless stuff that I will end up throwing out. You guys can do it too! Helping the earth will make everyone happy. It’s honestly sad seeing many animal species die out, our skies and oceans polluted, and trash by the side of the road. If we all work together, we can have a cleaner earth. If I remember correctly I think we might ban one use plastics like straws and Q-Tips in the near future which is great that’s one step closer to our goal. Examples of what I want to see are: At coffee shops people bring bottles for the people working there to fill it with coffee instead of their one use cups and at bookstores people bring reusable bags to fill it up with their purchased books.

In conclusion, there are many small things you can do that will still make a difference to help our earth and to help reach our goals. Let’s go!

There are many things in the world that could be changed or improved. What I am going to encourage the VSB to consider is to change the amount of time we spend in school. I think that there should be a seperate learning program for kids that work better with their families. This program would have students spend half the regular amount of time in school but get more school work to be completed at home. This is different than homeschooling, because all tests and presentations are still completed at school. I feel there are multiple benefits to this idea because it allows kids who have trouble focusing in school get their work done quicker and have a better final product. It also allows kids to spend more time with their families which is important. In conclusion I feel that this change could help kids with diverse and different learning habits do better and be happier in school.

"Be the change"

I think if there's something that needs to be changed in the world, it's poverty.

Poverty is everywhere we go and it's really sad because people in poverty, have nowhere to go.That's why we need to solve this problem. Some way we can stop this is to build more shelters, donate to the food bank and donate to charity. Helping other people will make you happy and they might do the same. Just imagine how you would feel if you were in poverty. Now imagine someone helping you by giving you food and clothes. That's how people in poverty want to feel right now. I'm helping out by donating my clothes to charities.

A small thing can change the world, and it could start with you.

Imagine going into the future, the year 2045. What do you see so far from what's been happening in 2020? Destruction, chaos, torture. This is what we humans have been making our own future. A friendly living site has become a disastrous place for any organisms to survive. This monstrous issue is called climate change. For this reason, I believe climate change is a major issue around the world because climate change can end our very own planet earth. Based on what scientists inferenced, approximately in the year 2045, earth will become something you see when a volcano erupts. Disaster. Everyone is running when an unexpected volcano erupts. Surely you wouldn’t want that to happen right? Hopefully that would convince you.

Now you may remember what all the tv shows tell you. “You can’t do everything by yourself. Sometimes you need a helping hand”. Ok, let me be honest with you. The tv shows are correct. You can’t change it by yourself, but you can start a change and persuade others to help you out. You fight for what you believe in and ask others to help you out with the same beliefs. Take Greta Thunderberg as an example. She fought for her beliefs and persuaded others to help her out. Be the change the world needs.

In conclusion, I think climate change is a major issue around the world and everyone should pitch in and help.

Change, it’s constantly happening to us whether it’s an update or a revolutionary change. You might think that it is hard that you would need many people to do it but I’m going to tell you how one person can make a change.

The world isn’t perfect and they are many people who believe there should be a change but sometimes no one will speak up or care so someone has to be the change and they stand alone. A good example of someone who standed alone is Rosa Parks, even though I’m 99% sure that no people of cover liked to stay in the back of the bus but they didn’t stand up and continued staying in there but she stood up to what she believed in and went in the front. Although after she had support but without her it would remain the same. Something that I think that needs to change is endangered species, I feel that not enough is stressed on this and that not enough people think on this. Support for why this needs more attention is that even if you don’t like animals we wouldn’t be where we are without them. For example bees we need them to survive and live in the world we do. Animals are beautiful and don’t deserve the treatment we have been giving them. Many people hunt animals and display parts of them as trophies and there is not enough strictness to this sure they are laws against it but people are still getting away with it.

In conclusion I think that people need to worry about animals more and stand up for them.

Imagine all your needs and requirements to have fun and enjoy life, could be immediately fulfilled. That is the power that one person may have to change anything.

For example Greta Thunberg is a teenage Swedish girl, she was normal for quite some time she did what was required of her self and nothing more until she heard about climate change and how it was destroying our beautiful planet. And because of this she protested against world leaders that were helping increase the amount of pollution. And so she would protest with her friends, and show the world how she felt, and when the world heard of Greta Thunberg feelings for the planet hundreds of thousands of people joined her movement to stop climate change she specifically stood up I guess the United States and China what are the worlds largest pollution creators. Greta Thunberg believes climate change and pollution is just like a mistake we keep repeating over and over again.

One thing I would like to change is how politics affect anyone and even everyone’s daily life. For example if the Canada decides to stop TransCanada pipeline because we’re not in support. A lot of workers will not have their jobs temporarily of course, but that time could change someone’s life or their future. And so I would like to change how the government can control everything the freedom and the rights of their citizens, even though we all might not be world-famous politicians or clever brained adults, we still understand how to live basic life. But I feel the government is taking part of that life away from us, so I feel we should have a public committee in which all citizens are allowed to use to communicate with the government, communicate their concerns, ask for help or help vote on decisions. That’s really all I wish for not only in Canada but around the world.

In conclusion, I believe everyone has their own opinion and their own changes they would like to make to the world this is mine what’s yours.

"Be the change you want to see". Many people have done just that, Greta Thunberg being one of them. Expressing her thoughts on climate change and pollution. Something I want to change is the poverty gap between people living in Canada. Poverty is something that is inevitable, if there's money, there's poverty. Poverty, though unavoidable, can be drastically reduced through raising minimum wages from $11.06 to something more livable. Or increasing the amount of jobs available. I think this because, there are people who are living as if they were kings and queens, with an abundance of money. Though some of these very wealthy people are helping donate money to charities, it seems unfair how there are still so many people living on the streets with a total of nearly five million people.

Most people think that to make a change, you need lots of people, like a petition or something. But today i'm here to tell you that this is wrong. One person can make a big difference in many ways. For example, Greta Thundberg is individual, and she made a big difference to our world because she's brave to stand up for herself and what she wants. Another way is that you do it with people. Like if a petition needs 1000 people to sign it. If you think just one person won't make any difference, and everybody thinks that, then nobody will sign it. And if everybody thinks the opposite of that, then the results will be the opposite too. In conclusion, just you can make a big change.

In Canada, we are fortunate to be able to voice our opinions without worrying about being caught by authorities. With enough support from those around you, you can completely change the country as a whole.
While most significant issues are brought to the attention of authorities, some are left alone because they're not an issue many are aware of. Sometimes, the government doesn't listen to its own citizens. This leads me to the subject of racism, a subject the government often disregards.
Racism has been an extremely large issue recently, mostly because of the covid-19 virus spreading around. Many people have been attacking the Chinese race for no reason, other than the fact 'they're the cause of coronavirus.' I feel like there should be laws on racism, racial comments, etc. Rather than public shaming, there should be actual punishments, depending on the situation. Although the government has taken some action on it, I feel as if their approach to it is slightly passive. For example, an elderly man in San Francisco was attacked when trying to collect cans. He was not doing anything, minding his own business, trying to provide for his family. A group of roughly 10 people started verbally and physically abusing him to the point where he ran away in tears. Yet, the only punishment they got was public shame and a police investigation.

Racism is not something we should disregard, and it is such a signifigant issue as of now.

Change is something that we are in significant need of in society. I think one thing people should stand up for more often is racism. A lot of people in the US (not trying to be stereotypical) think its okay and right to separate families who have done nothing wrong from each other because they are from Mexico. Not only that, but there is racism against African Americans, Iranians etc. African Americans have been treated horribly since the begining of time, even before they were Americans they we kidnapped and shipped to the US to become slaves. Even though slavery is illegal, that does not stop the racism going toward black people. Now what about my people? I am from Iran and it hurts me so much how racist people are towards my people and I. I have faced multiple racist comments and have also heard of lots of incidents. Unfortunatly, even if you are a canadian citizen born in iran depending on who's checking your passport at the US border you may not be able to enter the US due to the fact that you are born in Iran.The world needs to work harder to stop rasist comments and acts done by racist people, the world should also start education the world about racism and why it's not okay. There are many things that need to change in the world, for example climate change, poverty, pollution and much more things. But the main thing I'm focusing on is pollution.

Pollution is something poisonous or harmful to the environment and there's lots of things like greenhouse gases and other things but garbage is the thing I'm going to talk about. We have so much landfills being wasted and plastic polluting the earth and we are basically slowly killing ourselves. Here's how, we throw plastic away and it's very light weighted so the wind pushes it until it reaches the ocean and in the ocean it slowly breaks down into tiny plastic pieces that get eaten by marine animals. After that the marine animal will die from too much plastic or get stuck from it or we capture it and eat it. Then we serve it and the plastic in the food gets digested by us and there's plastic in our body and slowly you'll get more and more plastic in your body which is very unhealthy and it breaks the food chain. This is the main reason why plastic is slowly killing us and there's a lot o plastic around the world. For example the great pacific garbage patch has a lot of plastic and when fish accidentally eat it it kill other animals or itself and we don't want that. A wawy we could stop this is by using the 3 r's which is reuse, recycle and reduce and slowly if everyone uses it maybe the pollution will stop.

In conclusion, use the 3 r's and don't litter plastic or garbage onto the floor since it go's to the fish and the fish eat and we eat the fish and we die.

How can we change the world for the better? I feel that this question has crossed the minds of many others, but there's always one obstacle. What change would I make? You may be thinking that you're only one person, with no influence on anything. No, you can do many things! According to www.vancity.com, the average British Columbian produces about 1,400kg of total waste per person, which is approximately the same weight as a mid-sized automobile. The crazy fact is that all this waste is produced annually, per citizen! We need to take action! No matter how small it is! Our one home is dying due to many factors, all of which are caused by us humans. The least we could do is try to reduce the amount of trash we send out. In conclusion, one small step is still progress. Let's do all we can to save our planet.

Lot's of things need to be changed. For example I think we need to change how much pollution we cause. Pollution is cause many animals such as turtles to become endangered. It also effects our lakes and rivers. We can reuse recycle and reduce! Reducing will reduce the amount of waste you produce. Recycling is making new things, so it saves resources. And finally reducing help item from going into the land fill. In conclusion if everybody pitches in, we can make a change.

There are many things that need to change in our world, for example climate change, racism, poverty, and more. I think something that needs to be changed is the amount of trash and pollution in the ocean. The ocean has millions and millions of unique species, a lot that we don't even know about. However trash, oil, and chemicals are being dumped into it. Not only does this kill many animals and disrupts nature, it also contributes to global warming. Thankfully, cleaning the ocean is something that we can all help. Just by making sure you dispose trash correctly and pick up garbage you see at the ocean, the ocean would be cleaner. Can a person change the world? Sure!
It doesn't matter if you have differences in your gender, skin color, race, or even mental or physical abilities, it still doesn't change anything. Just choose to right thing to do. If you saw older students bullying younger kids, tell the teacher! You don't have to be scared! No act of kindness, no matter how small it is is ever wasted!! For example in the past, most people hated black people, but why? Are black people worse? No. Are people with other race/skin color better? No. Are they just jealous that the black people are better than white people? Idk, probably not. And moreover, black people made a huge change in the world in the past by telling people that being racists are equivalent to being a fool! Although people hated black people, black people did the right thing, and now racism has decreased a lot! That has already proven to you that no matter who you are, listen to your gut, and do the right thing!! "If you wait till you can do everything for everybody, instead of something for somebody, you end up doing nothing for nobody."

It is simple to make a change in Canada, because we are a democratic country. Every is the same, no one is better than one another and no one is considered worse. Bad things can change the world and so can good things, for example, if you see a piece of garbage on the floor, you could easily pick it up and throw it in a trash can, that is a good change. A bad change is, for example when somebody is the one who threw garbage on the ground, it can easily pile up and hurt our planet. In conclusion, people can make a change by using there mouth or helping on another.

There are many things that I'm sure everyone feel like should change, such as poverty, racism and climate change. However, I will be focusing on climate change.

Climate change is caused by all sorts of things, but mostly pollution. It's really ridiculous how much garbage there is considering how that could easily be changed. If everyone would just take a bit of their time to sort the trash out, there wouldn't be that much garbage piled up higher than entire buildings. We're basically killing ourselves, seeing as how eventually the earth would become uninhabitable due to the amount of pollution created by man. If we reduce, reuse and recycle, we could reduce the amount of pollution in the water and on land, allowing us to like, not die soon.

One time use plastic is probably the worst thing for the envirm=onment. One Time use plastic can take up to 1000 years to decompose. What needs to be changed in the world? Climate change? World hunger? What about Racism and discrimination? I know other things are more important so to speak then racism and discrimination, but it is important that we don’t do it. Why? Well, what if you want to sit in a seat and I say “ no you can’t sit here.“ and you ask why and I say ”because you have darker skin than me”. You would be pretty offended wouldn’t you. This is what I don’t get about racism, why would you be mean to someone because they look different than you? I mean everyone is different than you aren’t they? We all think that we are better than them because we have lighter skin in them or we have different culture than them, but the reality is we’re all humans. So why can’t we get along? Probably because they think that a different person is an outsider, but instead of discriminating or being racist to them why don’t we try to be friends with them? Would that really hurt anything to try. I mean they’re out there all alone in a new country they have no idea what to do and people are just kidnapping them or turn them into slaves. Why would you even think of doing that isn’t it better if you do that all the hard work yourself then you could brag about it. Don’t you love it when you make a new friend and both really nice to each other? Well that’s what we need to do with other people who are different than us. Instead of discriminating why don’t we help them.

The world isn't perfect. Infact far from it. 2 faced politicians dictators, global warming, Ncov 19, death,airstrikes, the msm, a prime minister that cant take responsibility, etc. However you yes you can change things. for example I, a normal 13 year old could in theory start a minor revolution in nunavut to arm polar bears with RPG-7s and AKMs. sure its not exactly "realistic" but its still a possibility. You could in theory change the world for better or for worse. You could bring a guillotine to a political rally or you could make a very efficient farming system to feed children in africa. You could topple capitalism or you could end global warming. The choice is up to you. You are responsible for your own actions. We all possess great power to change stuff. changes can be small too. Picking up trash you find on the street is a change as it may save seagulls. You have the power to change history. Use it responsibly.
