As a teacher, I have never been so proud of my students as I have been this past week. Students have fully embraced the Big 6 Learning Principles and it is having a tremendous effect on the learning happening in our classroom. This week, students saw evidence of their learning. They compared their pre-assessments for reading strategies from September to what they know now. It was like night and day. All students can now recognize and use the reading strategies to help deepen their understanding of reading materials.

IMPORTANT:
1.) NO SCHOOL TODAY (PRO-D DAY). Teachers are participating in a workshop on racism and indigenous culture.
2.) Parents, please watch this Brene Brown video on Empathy with your child and have a discussion about it.
3.) Please note, there are several students who are not doing the daily PAR. I am well aware of who is completing it and those who are trying to fly under my radar. :)

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Complete 4 page booklet and upload to FreshGrade.
Complete Pg. 90 in Jump Math.
Upload to FreshGrade
We will mark/correct math in class on Monday. (No need to do this over the weekend)

2.) LA/POWERFUL RESPONSE:

If you didn't post your final edited/revised version of your POWERFUL RESPONSE (Big Idea) on Tuesday's post, please complete by posting your self-assessment and your revised version.
Follow the success criteria on the rubric carefully.
Ask questions here if you have any. Read the posts by your classmates if you need a better idea of what is expected.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video on EMPATHY with your parents. It is a necessary watch and a powerful one.
Have a discussion with your parents about it.
Today's PAR is a free write.
Write a paragraph about what you think empathy is and how you can be more empathetic towards others at school.
Ask two students about the content of their paragraph.
Respond to any questions you receive.

In my opinion, Empathy is something that you feel when you relate to someone. When all your emotions flow including pity goes away and your just relating to this person who is hurt. You try to make things better and to help this one person suddenly becomes your number 1 task; and your not going to take it off your list, your just gonna stay there and help this person even if it means to leave them alone for a bit and come back, or be it doing whatever that person wants to do, etc. In Empathy, only then can you feel as though your emotions are connected and have formed a line. Furthermore, I'd also like to be more empathetic at school. Sometimes I feel like someone could be feeling left out, and I just want to relate to them and talk to them but I don't have the confidence if I was really sure that was how they felt. To all the people that helped me get comfortable at a new school, I'd like to give something back as a thanks. I'd like to help people who are hurt but just don't show it, I feel these types of people are very fragile as their emotions seep in but also flow hard which makes others unaware of a person's feelings.

Have you ever been excited when your friend gets excited? That is an example of empathy! What do I think empathy is? Empathy is like putting yourself in a spot to make others feel better. To sense how they feel. To make people feel better. Another example is if you brother won something, then feeling the same excitement would mean you are showing empathy. I am already very emphatic but you can always improve. I can be more empathetic towards others in school by helping others do well on their things so if they do well then that will make me feel special too. I can talk to more people and try to feel how I would feel if I were in their position. There are a lot of ways to be more empathetic. Those are my ways on being more empathetic. What are yours?

Have you ever felt the other persons pain? Do you empathize others around you? Empathy is a sort of action/emotion where you can understand the other person’s emotions in that situation and how they feel with all their upbrings to that moment. One may emphasize someone that has just broken off marriage while some would complain about how their marriage was good enough. When you emphasize you know how they are and though you may not be able to fix their problems, you can use the knowledge you acquired from them and find a way to cheer them up, us the knowledge and do specific actions to let them know that it is okay to feel that. You can find empathy within you by thinking about the situation from their perspective. No, not just how would you act in that situation, how you would act with all the experiences they had. It separates them and you by BEING them, if you had a bad upbringing than would you want to abort your child even though your whole family wants you to carry out the family name? It’s putting yourself in their shoes that can separate the sympathies and empathies.

What is empathy? Imagine (if you will) that your walking in the rain, and you see a old woman walking in the pouring rain. What would you do? Now empathy (in my understanding) is when you feel bad about something. So when someone see old woman/man he would probably lend her/him his umrella because he feels bad for elder person to be walking in the rain. Now to be completely honest, i would't lend them my umbrella, and i dont think anyone here would because you dont know them and why would you want to be wet? Its not a great expirience to be wet in the rain and....Yeah i dont know them. So here is another do it yourself question(s)

1) What would you do if a homeless person is begging for food? (you're hungry and only have 5 dollars)

2) What would you do if you were at a ice cream shop really hungry for some ice cream but some kid forgot to bring money? (You only have enough for 1 ice-cream and your very hungry for some)

3) What would you do if you saw a lost kid on your way home crying? (it would take alot of time to bring them home and you would miss dinner)

Now, i believe everyone would choose whatever is good fo them because, every man for themselves, if you say you would help someone else, your lying. Post your real answers!

I would do everything for myself, EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF/HERSELF. This is my actual answer, would'nt do anything for someone i dont know, but it could chnage for the homeless man because, he's hungry after all and no one here know's how hungry thy are, way hungrier then all of us here ever ha.

Have you ever felt like nobody understands you? Have you ever felt someone else’s pain and know that they aren’t alone in this journey? Well there you go, that is empathy. Researchers define empathy as the ability to sense other people’s feelings and emotions. The ability to tune into others emotions and help them by your own perspective. This is extremely important because it helps us understand how others are feeling, therefore we can respond appropriately to their situation. Though sometimes, there could be a negative side to empathy. People who are good at reading others could use their empathy skills to manipulate and deceive others. Have you ever heard of the saying? “To put yourself in someone else’s shoes” that is empathy! Having empathy doesn’t always mean that we’ll want to help others, it’s more of a compassionate action that is related to kindness. Empathy is also important for success, it shows appreciation for others and builds relationships. This can help with leadership and socializing skills that can increase their success in a job. It’s the joy you feel at someone’s birthday party or the same pain you experience when you see someone suffering.

What is empathy? I think that empathy is connecting with someone because they share the same problems or differences and knowing that there is someone who is same as you, can make you feel better. Empathy is when people who are in a same or alike situation connect, and understands each other. In that way, you don't need to think depressed or that you are the only one who is in that situation. In school, one way I can empathize with my friends is like talking to them when they are having trouble with solving a question. The difference between empathy and sympathy is that being empathetic is connecting with someone who has the same problem as you, but being sympathetic is imagining how the problem be to the person, and not actually connecting with them. In my opinion, being sympathetic makes the person's feelings worse. What is your opinion on empathy?

Do you ever feel happy when your friend gets a perfect score on their test, or something that makes them feel happy? This is called empathy. Empathy is very important. People will want to be around you if you are kind and caring, rather than a person who says "Oh whatever" when they hear your grandma died. Being empathetic is good. And we can always be more empathetic in class. Like, caring for someone when they feel down, or making sure they feel better. We can all be empathetic, and we should be. How can you be more empathetic?

This video describes empathy and sympathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, sympathy is feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune. I think empathy is having the ability to sense other people's emotions, combined with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling. So to be more empathetic, you have to be more understanding, you need good eye for non-verbal clues, and you can also just ask about someone’s well being. There are many ways to be empathetic, I would love to hear your thought on it.

At first, I did not exactly know what empathy was until I watched this video. I think that empathy is when you understand how another person feels, when you have felt the same way as another person, or when you sense how someone is feeling. I found out that emotion researchers define empathy as the ability to sense others emotions. I could be more empathetic towards others in school by finding out how someone is feeling and try to relate to the person. Overall, I think that empathy is something that helps people relate their feelings with others.

I didn't understand what empathy was, until I watched the video that explains what empathy is. Empathy is the feeling when you connect to someone that had the same experience and feeling as you. Simpathy is a totally different thing than empathy, because simpathy is when you feel bad for someone and you don't do anything about them, so empathy is really what you need rather then simpathy. A way I could be empathic to others, is relating to what others experience and connecting to them. Now what I understand about empathy is it really is about connecting and relating to others feelings..

Before I watched this video, I thought of empathy and sympathy as the same thing. Empathy is feeling what someone else is feeling/knowing how they feel. Sympathy is telling someone that they "at least" still have something. Empathy is relating to what they feel or understanding how they feel. Being empathetic could be just giving someone a hug. being sympathetic does not help anyone. It will only make someone more upset. So please, if you aren't going to be empathetic, just don't be anything. especially not sympathetic. Now that I have watched this video, I understand that empathy and sympathy are VERY different.

Empathy is when someone had a pain that you have felt before. I think empathy is a way of understanding each other. When we practice empathy, we connect to our experiences. One person's experience may solve the other person's problem. That will make each other good friends and feel they are trustworthy. Also, I think that if you speak about the problem to someone else, it will make the problem better. If you had the problem only to yourself, you won't get other solutions/ideas. If you speak about the problem to other people, you will get new solutions/ideas or better solutions or ideas. It is a lot faster to get solutions/ideas by speaking to other people rather than think about the problem by yourself. At school, I will use empathy to understand people so I can make the connection better with myself and someone else. I will also use it to get more and better solutions and ideas about a problem. That is my understanding of empathy and those were how I might use it.

Empathy and sympathy are different things, and this video explains that well. The difference is that with sympathy, you are feeling bad for someone but not really doing anything about it, or trying to make their problems seem less bad than they are by offering a not-helpful silver lining. Empathy is when you actually try to imagine what they are experiencing. For example, if a depressed kid talks to a friend for help, if the friend was empathetic, even if they were not or had never been depressed, they would try to put themselves in the depressed kid's shoes and connect with them. This way, the non-depressed friend could talk about it to the depressed friend in a way that really matters and could help the depressed kid. If the non-depressed kid was sympathetic instead of empathetic, they would just say "Oh, it's too bad that you're depressed and I hope you can get better soon, at least you're not suicidal yet" and walk away, not even trying to really understand what depression even is or how the depressed kid is feeling. This isn't to say everyone needs to be empathetic to people who haven't asked for it, for example the depressed kid might not tell anyone. In this case, how I see it is that no one has a responsibility to try to help them because 1. the kid might not want people to try to help him and 2. if the kid doesn't tell anyone how are they supposed to know they should be helping them? Also, the kid might be able to deal with their problems just fine, or even better, on their own.

Empathy and simpanthy are different things and the video explains it. The difference is simpanthy is you feel bad for someone and empathy is when try to imagine what they are experiencing. I can't finish this so, TO BE CONTINUED.

Empathy in my opinion is hard to control. Because when lets say your friend is not doing so well mentally ( lets say self doubts). Empathy is when you try and imagine how they are felling and or you do know how they feel and than you connect with them so they know that they aren't alone. Sympathy is when you feel bad for that person and silver line it for example, Sympathy: "oh well that sucks hope it gets better." Empathy: " hey i might not know how you are feeling but I'm here for you" or " hey I know how your feeling talk to me I'll understand."
Well these are just my views on empathy.

What is the difference between sympathy and empathy? Sympathy is when you try to make someone feel better and empathy is when you are there for them, listen to them and can relate to them. I think Brené brown explained this very well but I think she made sympathy seem like a bad thing when it is not. If I am having a bad day I would rather have someone be empathetic and listen to me because then I feel apreciated and cared for. Don't waste your pain, use it to help others.

What does it mean to have empathy? Empathy means to care for someone. If someone is having trouble and wants to share it with you, and you give them all your support and encourage them, that's empathy. Sympathy on the other hand, if your friend talks about trouble and all you do is say "Oh it's fine, at least..." that's not a good way of sheering up or supporting friend. That might even anger or make them feel more bad which is not what we're trying to do. Whenever a friend's a bit moody or down, remember to always give them empathy and to help them out. It would definitely help them out!

When we make connections to people in the world, and when we understand what the others have going through, we are experiencing empathy. Empathy is when you make a connection deep enough to clearly understand and know what the other is feeling of. Empathy can also connect people from different places now that they have a deep connections they all have connected to. How I can be more empathetic. This is my opinion. I believe that there isn't anything we can do to become more empathetic because we can only be empathetic when we have a connection. Without the connections we can't be empathetic instead only be sympathetic.

Do you know what empathy is? For me empathy is when you can read people’s emotions and connect with them or identify with them and you can comfort them because you’ve also experienced something similar, it’s not like sympathy where you feel bad but you don’t connect and you don’t really do anything about it. In short, empathy is when you’ve felt the same or similar as someone else and you can connect with them.

Do you ever feel down, sad and feel like you're stuck in a hole, deep inside thinking that you're the only one here? You feel the need to talk someone and you do, but all they show is symphathy. They just tell you that it's fine, there's nothing to worry about. But emphathy on the other hand, can understand what you're feeling, and can let you feel the emotions that they're feeling. A therapist is a good person that can feel emphathy for you, but your friends, teachers, parents and your siblings can all feel emphathy for you and feel the emotions with you.

Empathy plays a big part in ones life, its a way to understand others and get a feel of what they feel like. Once you better understand how someone is feeling, and in my experience you'll have an easier time knowing how to treat them. It is a challenge to know how to treat someone, especially when you have not been through what they have. This all relays on your ability to reference what someone feels like.

There is different types of empathy, for example emotional empathy and although it may seem as it would be the only type, there is actually ONE more, it would be called a a somatic empathy. This represents how someone feels physically.

Could be the way someone feels because of a wound, and its not only wounds though. It can be a disease now in our case... How does someone feel now that they COVID-19? Are they isolated can they talk to their family? Answering questions like that would also make you understand how someone would feel.
