THE NOVEL APPROACH - READING STRATEGIES

Students continued learning about reading strategies today. Mr. Bains continued Mr. Hong's lesson on visualizations! He helped students practice making visualizations to deepen their understanding of text. Students are building their background knowledge of different strategies and getting practice using them. This will continue for several months. This will not only help the students in Language Arts, but it will help them in all areas of their learning and life! Essentially, they are learning how to be strategic in using 'COMPREHENSION' strategies!

IMPORTANT:
1.) Return all forms ASAP!

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete any unfinished work (mark and correct at home)

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete visible thinking and graphic organizers (visualizations) if you didn't finish these in class.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. This is a time to spend with family and to give gratitude for all the things you have.
LEARNING INTENTIONS: I can write a paragraph to show my appreciation for someone in my family.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) Write about one person you want to show gratitude towards and why you appreciate them so much!
3.) Provide 3 supporting examples.
4.) Explain the why you are so appreciative of these 3 things this person does or has done for you.
5.) Conclusion
6.) Check your writing for the givens/conventions (spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation)
7.) Give one person feedback based on the above criteria. Check to see your peers completed all parts of the above success criteria.
8.) Edit/revise your post based no peer feedback or a self-assessment.

Class of 2021 Logo!

Today, students continued learning about long multiplication and how to complete proper self-assessments using success criteria and their work. This process is extremely important for them to lear. It will help them all achieve learning success this year. Later in the afternoon, we continued reading from 'ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S' and then we voted on which logo to use for our 2021 Grad hoodies. Majority rules! They decided on logo #10!

IMPORTANT:
1.) Return all personal information forms that were handed out yesterday. Parents must review and sign all forms.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete pg 18-21

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we learned how to do long multiplication. Many of us are already aware of how to do this, however, it is important to follow the steps in order to avoid errors.
You have also been working on paragraph writing. Today, you will continue this, however, you must add 'TRANSITION' words that show a sequential order. For example, what comes first? Second? Third? Etc. Click here for some transition words you can use to show 'ORDER'.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a paragraph that uses transition words to show 'ORDER'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) Includes at least 3 transition words that show 'ORDER'.
3.) Clearly explains how to do long multiplication. Feel free to use tips from the video or your Jump math book'. But, please try to put it into your own words.
4.) Check for the givens/conventions of writing (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, capitals, and punctuation).
5.) Read the other paragraphs posted by your classmates. Give 2 people suggestions on something they can improve based on the above criteria points.
6.) Edit/revise your paragraph based on the feedback you received or a self-assessment of the above criteria.

WELCOME TO OUR BETA FISH, JELLO!

Welcome, Jello!

Today, we gained a new member of our Div 1 classroom. We welcomed, Jello, to our class. Jello will sit with each of the learning groups for a few weeks at a time. Students will learn to care for Jello in order to keep him/her healthy. Students continued practicing restating topic sentences for their conclusions and also learned more about 'VISUALIZING' while they read in order to deepen their comprehension. The students are really getting the hang of their 'VISIBLE THINKING' skills!

IMPORTANT:
1.) Have your parents sign and review all the forms in your personal information packages and return them to me ASAP!

LEARNING:

Complete pg. 12-13 of JUMP MATAH

2.) LA / NOVEL APPROACH / READING:

LEARNING INTENTION: I can read everything on today's post and verify it with an engaging sentence.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Write one sentence that confirms what the daily blurb was about and what you had for homework.
2.) Givens/Conventions are all checked before posting (Spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure)
3.) That is all.

BRAVO!

Mr. Bains and I have been very happy with how this year has started off! Students have embraced our the way we learn with open arms and the learning is in full swing! Students submitted their 2 projects yesterday. On Monday, students will engage in the self/peer-assessment process to see how they can improve their work (based on the success criteria). Once we have evaluated their work, students will complete learning reflections and upload it FreshGrade for parents to comment on. Parents will receive more information regarding FreshGrade. For a student's education to be successful, parents, students, and teachers must all be involved! Be sure to check the class website regularly to see what your child has been learning!

IMPORTANT:

If Ms. Altman assigned any work for Socials, make sure this is completed over the weekend.

LEARNING:

Complete graphic organizer for 'VISUALIZATIONS' if you didn't complete this in class

Bonjour, Bonjour!

Today, Mr. Bains took charge in Mr. Hong's absence. He reviewed body paragraphs with the students, taught them how to calculate area, gave them time to work on their collages and Plant I.D. projects, and also taught them some introductory French! You will have some time to organize your materials for your Plant I.D. Projects with your groups in class tomorrow. Be sure to complete your portion by tomorrow! Mr. Hong and Mr. Bains will check your work!
IMPORTANT:

Collages are due tomorrow.
Plant I.D. Projects are due tomorrow.

LEARNING:
1.) SCIENCE:

Complete Plant I.D. Projects for tomorrow.
You will have some time in class to organize the final touches with your groups.
Be sure to go through your criteria handouts to ensure you have completed your work for tomorrow.

2.) ART/COLLAGE:

Due tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE (PAR):

You have been busy working on your projects this week. You will hand them both in tomorrow.
Based on what you know about the BIG 6 learning principles, write a paragraph of how they helped you complete one of these projects. (learning intentions, success criteria, questions, self/peer assessment, descriptive feedback, and ownership.)
LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain how I used at least 3 of the BIG 6 Learning Principles while working on my science project or my collage.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (hook, body, and conclusion)
2.) State at least 3 of the Big 6 Learning Principles
3.) Explain how the 3 principles you used helped push your learning forward. For example, how did the success criteria help you create an 'extending' quality piece of work? How did a self-assessment using the success criteria help you see what you needed to add or improve? How did descriptive feedback from Mr. Hong or Mr. Bains help you improve your work? Etc.
4.) Check your work for the givens/conventions (spelling, capitals, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar)
5.) Read one other post and give your classmate a descriptive feedback (suggestion for improvement).
6.) Edit/revise your original post by making the improvements.
