FRIDAY: SETTING, PLANNING, and ACHIEVING GOALS!

All of the division 4 students were very much looking forward to hiking up the Grouse Grind today. However, due to torrential rain, we had to postpone the trip until further notice. Hopefully, we are able to complete the Grouse Grind in the near future! We will then be able to compare those times with the times we achieve at the end of the year. Although we do our best to improve our times, simply completing the Grouse Grind is a feat in itself!

LEARNING INTENTIONS: To learn about the importance of setting, planning, and working towards achieving those goals.

1.) LA: You will hand in your 100 Word Challenge write on Monday and the class will vote for the top 3! See if you can improve yours over the weekend! Here is a link to the image we used in class.

2.) MATH: Complete drawing, colouring, cutting, pasting, and bordering your pictures for your math assignment. You should have 10 completed for Monday.

3.) SCIENCE: Complete your research from Friday on your Google Drive.

List your individual species and be sure to be able to explain at least 5 points about your animal. Don't forget to copy and paste the link/url/address of where you got your information.
Which ecosystem does it belong to?
Describe at least 3 biotic / abiotic interactions.
Describe at least 3 biotic / biotic interactions.
You will share your information with the class on Monday.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video of a jaguar attacking a crocodile.
In sentence/paragraph form, post as many different interactions that you can see in this video. Be sure to explain using the scientific terms you learned in school. Be sure to explain which components are biotic and which components are abiotic.
There are many different interactions that are taking place in this video.

Tuesday: Grouse Grind

Today, all of our Gr. 6/7 students hiked up the Grouse Grind. Our fastest student completed the Grind in just over 43 minutes. All of our students beat their previous times from term 1. They have all worked hard throughout the year to build their stamina and endurance in anticipation of this year end event. They have all participated in moderate to vigorous physical activities throughout the year. Well done students!

Monday: Grouse Grind Preparation

Today, the students started mentally preparing for the challenge that is ahead of them. Tomorrow will be their second Grouse Grind of the year. Each of the students have worked on their cardiovascular health and have been participating in moderate to vigorous physical activities on a daily basis since September. All students are expected to beat their times from their first Grouse Grind in term 1. As an additional incentive, any student who beats Mr. Hong will be given a prize. Mr. Hong is an old man, so most of the students should be able to beat him.

1.) SOCIALS/LA: Prepare for your presentation. You will present on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Students will be chosen randomly so everyone must be ready to present on Wednesday.

2.) E-FOLIOS: Continue to update your learning reflections based on the criteria we have been using since the beginning of the year. Remember to always refer back to the learning intentions and the criteria of each of your assignments.

3.) FIELD TRIP: Grouse Grind tomorrow. We will go rain or shine. It will only be cancelled if there is a torrential downpour which isn't likely.

Wednesday: Working Towards Our Goals

Repeat: Usain Bolt and Amada's dad

A lot of successful people out there say that simply setting goals will not translate into success. To achieve your goals, you need to set them, make a plan on how you're going to achieve them, and work hard to achieve the goals. The Grouse Grind Video from term 1 is evidence that anybody who works hard can complete a daunting task. All grade 6/7 students worked on their cardiovascular health in the weeks building up to the event. Had students not planned to improve their endurance before the trip, many students most likely would not have been physically and mentally prepared for it.

The Grade 6/7 students have completed 2 drafts of their expository essays on setting and achieving goals. They have completed self and peer assessments and have received feedback not only from the teachers, but also from their peers. After taking the feedback they received into consideration, they made edits/revisions to their first drafts. They will receive their writing back this week and will make the final edits/revisions based on the feedback they receive.

2.) SHOWCASED BLOG:

Visit Minnie Mouse's Learning Journey and leave her at least 4 comments (feedback/questions/suggestions, etc)

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #3:

How do you think Usain Bolt achieved his goal of becoming the fastest person to ever live? Was it pure talent? Was it a combination of planning, working hard, and raw talent?
Explain using the goal setting process and what you have learned about achieving your goals.

4.) VALENTINE'S DAY CELEBRATION

Post a comment here about what snacks/drinks/plates you plan to bring tomorrow so we don't double up on the same things. :)

Thursday: Learning about Conflicts and Mixing Mediums

IMPORTANT: TOMORROW IS THE DEADLINE FOR GROUSE GRIND FORMS! BEG YOUR PARENTS TO DRIVE ON TUESDAY! :) If we dont' have enough drivers, we will cancel the field trip.

Today, you learned how to draw facial features (eyes) when drawing anime/manga characters. We will continue pencil drawings of different features over the next couple of weeks. Once you have completed your self-portraits, we will learn how to 'DIGITIZE' them! These will become your 'DIGITAL CHARACTERS' for your 'DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS'.

1.) POST A RESPONSE: We learned a lot about Summer's 'CHARACTER' today. Describe a little bit about her personality. Give details and examples from the story to support your points.

BONUS: Other than the song that was played for you in class, can you think of another song that could represent Auggie? Tell us the song, title, and a little bit about the meaning of the song.

- Your 'CONFLICT' responses will be written in class tomorrow.

3.) MATH 6 - Pg 72 #1 and #3 YOU MUST SHOW ALL YOUR WORK USING ARRAYS, RAINBOWS, OR THE EQUATIONS. You must also list the factors clearly.

Tuesday: Engaged Learners and The Literary Elements

Your road to digital and learning fluency continued today. You learned the ins and outs of COMMUNICATION and COLLABORATION via Google Drive/Docs. Show your parents how this works. In addition to this, you learned how important feedback is (receiving and giving) in the learning process. We have covered 4 components of Assessment For Learning (AFL) and will continue to learn more about this over the next few weeks. Parents, I have provided a link here so you can see a snapshot of what AFL is and how it can help your son/daughter learn.

1.) POST A RESPONSE: Today you learned about different literary elements. You learned about plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. "It was mad exciting!" Click here to see a summary of each of them.
a.) Write about the setting of the novel (WONDER)
b.) Write about 2 of the characters.
- Include as much detail as possible for both (a) and (b). Feel free to use your notes from class today. Also, don't forget about the blogging process - post, give/receive feedback, revise.

2.) FIELD TRIP FORMS: Have your parents fill these out for tomorrow and bring your $10. Ask your parents to come along! :) Also, please return any outstanding forms that you have yet to hand in.

3.) Grade 6 Math - Pg 76 #2, #3, #4, #6a #6d
Grade 7 Math - Any assignments that were given in your math class.
